Niles police responded Sunday morning at about 8:38 a.m. to the intersection of Milwaukee Avenue and Church Street, just south of Golf Mill Shopping Center, where a pedestrian had been hit, they said.
The pedestrian, from Niles, had been trying to cross Milwaukee Avenue when he was struck by a 2017 Toyota RAV 4 driven by a 66-year-old Northbrook man, police said in a news release. The Toyota driver had a green light and was heading southeast on Milwaukee in the curb lane.
The Niles Fire Department took the pedestrian to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where he was pronounced dead at 9:05 a.m.
Niles police identified the pedestrian as Yalda D. Shabou, an 85-year-old man whose last known address was in the 9200 block of North Maryland Street in Niles.
Shabou had been trying to cross from the east to the west side of Milwaukee Avenue. The traffic light facing him was red and he did not have a walk signal, said Niles Police Sgt. Dan Borkowski. Shabou made it most of the way across before tripping and falling in the westernmost lane, which was the curb lane with traffic going in a southeasterly direction, before he was struck.
The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene after the crash. No citations have been issued, police said.
Milwaukee Avenue and Maryland were closed in both directions while police conducted an investigation. The Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) is assisting the Niles Police Department.
Church Street dead-ends into Maryland Avenue slightly west of the intersection with Milwaukee Avenue. Borkowski noted the traffic standard on the west side of the Milwaukee Avenue intersection says Church Street, though it is the same intersection as Milwaukee and Maryland.
